Highly Flexible and Deployable Antenna Array Using Double-arch-shaped PTFE Films

95 Photo Captured-2

A highly conformable, foldable, and deployable double-arch-shaped array (DASA) is presented. The antenna is made lightweight by combining polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film and strips of polyethylene foam (PF-4). A single conformable antenna (SCA) at L-band is first presented.

The SCA is used for the design of a 1×4 linear array, which is deployable and can be completely conformed to a cylinder with radius R = 40 mm. In the planar form, the antenna provides a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 1.20-1.31 GHz (9.4%) with a gain of 14.8 dBi at 1.25 GHz. The array is measured for the flat case and conformed to cylinders ranging in radius from 900 mm to 200 mm.
