Advancing CMOS Technologies: From CFET to Beyond-CFET Transistor Architectures

Date:  5 May 2026

Time: 10:30 am  to 11:30 am

Venue: NUS, Block 6, #06-02 Eureka Seminar Room, 5 Engineering Drive 1, Singapore 117608

The NUS SHINE Centre hosted an insightful seminar on 5 May 2026 featuring Dr Serge Biesemans from imec, who shared perspectives on the evolution of advanced semiconductor transistor architectures.   We were also honoured by the presence of Prof. Aaron Thean, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) & Provost of NUS, highlighting the importance of this topic to the university’s research and innovation agenda.

The session provided a clear overview of the progression from FinFET to Gate-All-Around (GAA) devices, and towards the emerging complementary FET (mCFET).

Key highlights included:

•  Roadmap and evolutionary path from planar transistors to FinFET, and then to 3D vertical stacking GAA.

•  Continued relevance of Moore’s Law, supported by active R&D in GAA and CFET technologies

•  Fabrication steps and design principles of GAA and CFET, including vertical dual source/drain (S/D) challenges.

•  Expansion of innovation scope beyond IC scaling to system-level integration, including packaging and chiplet approaches

•  Growing importance of wafer bonding for hybrid electronic systems, including Si and Ge integration into CMOS

•  Future directions involving partitioning of SoC functions into optimised technologies and recombining them at the package level

The seminar concluded with an engaging Q&A session, reflecting strong interest and active discussion among participants.

We would like to thank Dr Serge Biesemans for his valuable sharing, Prof. Aaron Thean for his support, and all attendees for their participation and insightful questions.
