Highly Flexible and Foldable Antenna Array using Corrugated CCPM-based Patches

Publication

89 photo captured

A compact, lightweight, and flexible array antenna for L-band applications is presented. The antenna consists of a primary patch and two parasitic patches using corrugated copper-cladded polyimide (CCPM) films, which provide excellent bending performance.

A single antenna with high bending capability is developed first. This element is used to demonstrate a 1×4 linear array. The antenna has a bandwidth from 1.18 GHz to 1.26 GHz with a maximum gain of 14.6 dBi at 1.22 GHz. The antenna array is analyzed and measured for the flat case as well cylindrical cases with radius of 400, 300, 200, and 160 mm.

Dual – Polarized and Fully Conformal Antenna using Stacked Semi – Elliptical Shaped Polyimide Films

Publication

88 photo Captured

A multilayer conformal dual-polarized antenna (ML-CDPA) with bending performance in all directions is presented. The antenna consists of a supporting ground plane and four identical radiating elements. Each element comprises two semi-elliptical-shaped polyimide films with patches stacked together to achieve 20% bandwidth.

The ML-CDPA is designed for L-band and tested for the flat case as well as conformed to a cylinder with 200 mm, 160 mm, 150 mm, 100 mm, and 80 mm radius.

Highly Flexible and Deployable Antenna Array Using Double-arch-shaped PTFE Films

Publication

95 Photo Captured-2

A highly conformable, foldable, and deployable double-arch-shaped array (DASA) is presented. The antenna is made lightweight by combining polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film and strips of polyethylene foam (PF-4). A single conformable antenna (SCA) at L-band is first presented.

The SCA is used for the design of a 1×4 linear array, which is deployable and can be completely conformed to a cylinder with radius R = 40 mm. In the planar form, the antenna provides a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 1.20-1.31 GHz (9.4%) with a gain of 14.8 dBi at 1.25 GHz. The array is measured for the flat case and conformed to cylinders ranging in radius from 900 mm to 200 mm.
